Thanks to our latitude, limited sunlight exposure, and spending most of our time indoors, the UK has a well-documented vitamin D problem. Public Health England recommends everyone take 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D throughout autumn and winter — and yet most people don’t.

During summer months, the body produces vitamin D from sunlight, but from October to March, there’s insufficient UVB radiation in UK skies for synthesis. Add to that the fact that food sources of vitamin D are limited (oily fish, egg yolks, fortified foods) and you have a widespread deficiency that goes largely unaddressed.

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form your skin produces from sunlight, and it’s the most effective supplemental form. Once activated by your liver and kidneys, it acts more like a hormone than a typical vitamin — influencing virtually every cell in your body.

D3’s primary job is managing calcium absorption from your gut and directing it where it needs to go. Without sufficient D3, your body struggles to absorb calcium from food, which can lead to weakened bones, muscle weakness, and impaired immune function.

The Calcium Routing Problem: Why D3 Alone Isn’t Enough

Here’s where most people go wrong. Vitamin D3 increases calcium absorption from your gut — but it doesn’t control where that calcium ends up. Without K2 to direct it, calcium can be deposited in soft tissues, including your arteries (where it contributes to arterial stiffness) rather than your bones.

Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) acts as a co-factor for osteocalcin, a protein that binds calcium to bone matrix. It also activates matrix Gla-protein (MGP), which prevents calcium from accumulating in blood vessel walls. In short: K2 ensures the calcium D3 pulls in goes to the right place.

Why MK-7 K2 Is the Better Form

K2 comes in two main forms: MK-4 (short half-life, requires high doses) and MK-7 (far longer half-life, more stable, effective at lower doses). For daily supplementation, MK-7 is the clear winner — typically derived from natto (fermented soybeans) or via bacterial fermentation.

Look for supplements providing at least 100mcg of MK-7 alongside your D3. This synergy is well-supported by research on bone density and cardiovascular health.

Who Should Supplement D3 + K2?

  • Anyone in the UK during autumn/winter (October–March)
  • People with limited sun exposure or who wear SPF daily
  • Those over 50 (bone density naturally declines)
  • People with darker skin (melanin reduces D synthesis)
  • Anyone with low dietary vitamin D intake

Dosage and Testing

For most adults, 1,000–4,000 IU of D3 daily is a reasonable range. If you’re severely deficient, your GP may prescribe higher doses. Testing your 25-OH vitamin D levels via blood test gives you a precise baseline — aim for 50–80 nmol/L for optimal range.

Pair this with 100–200mcg of MK-7 K2 for the calcium-routing effect. Those on blood thinners should consult their doctor before supplementing K2, as it affects clotting pathways.

Tip

Take vitamin D3 with a fat-containing meal — it’s a fat-soluble vitamin and absorption improves significantly when taken with dietary fat.

My Take

D3 + K2 is one of the most evidence-backed supplement combinations you can take, particularly in the UK. The calcium routing mechanism alone makes a compelling case — without K2, you’re essentially pulling calcium into your system without any guarantee it’s going to your bones rather than your arteries.

I run a blood test once a year to check my D levels and adjust accordingly. It’s a cheap, low-risk intervention with outsized benefits for bone health, immune function, and mood.
