The interaction between zinc and copper occurs at the level of metallothionein — a protein produced in intestinal cells that binds both minerals. When zinc levels are high, metallothionein production increases, and metallothionein binds copper more tightly than it binds zinc. The result is that copper absorption is reduced, and bound copper is trapped in the intestinal cells and excreted. This is a normal physiological response to high zinc intake — but when zinc supplementation is chronic, copper deficiency develops predictably.

Why Zinc Alone Can Be Harmful

Zinc supplementation at doses above 15mg daily — common in cold remedies and immune support formulations — significantly reduces copper absorption. This effect begins within days of starting supplementation and compounds over weeks. Copper deficiency can develop within weeks to months of consistent high-dose zinc supplementation, depending on the dose and baseline copper status. The consequences include anaemia that does not respond to iron supplementation, neurological symptoms resembling vitamin B12 deficiency, and impaired immune function that appears paradoxical given that zinc was being supplemented to support immunity.

The neurological consequences of copper deficiency are particularly concerning and frequently misdiagnosed. They include numbness and tingling in the extremities, difficulty with coordination and balance, and in severe cases, symptoms that mimic multiple sclerosis or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). These symptoms are frequently investigated extensively — including spinal taps and MRI imaging — before copper deficiency is considered, because the connection to zinc supplementation is not widely understood outside of specialist circles.

The Ideal Ratio

The Western diet typically provides copper in adequate amounts through foods like shellfish, nuts, seeds, and dark chocolate. The problem is supplemental zinc without accompanying copper. If you are taking zinc at doses above 15mg daily — whether through supplements or high-zinc cold formulas taken frequently — you should be taking copper alongside it. The ratio matters: approximately 15mg zinc to 1mg copper is considered safe for long-term use and maintains the balance that prevents both deficiency states.

The distinction between zinc as a supplement and zinc as a pharmaceutical agent matters here. Short-term high-dose zinc during active infections is unlikely to cause copper depletion in the way that chronic high-dose zinc supplementation does. The problem is daily use of zinc supplements at doses above 15mg, particularly in people whose diets are low in copper-rich foods. Many people do not realise that the zinc in their daily multivitamin — often 15-25mg per tablet — is a chronic supplemental dose that warrants copper co-supplementation.

Immune Function and the Zinc-Copper Balance

Copper is essential for the function of the immune system — particularly for the development and maintenance of neutrophils, the white blood cells that are the body’s first line of defence against bacterial infection. Neutrophils require copper for their oxidative burst mechanism — the process by which they destroy bacteria. Without adequate copper, neutrophil function is compromised, and the immune system cannot respond properly to bacterial threats.

Zinc, paradoxically, can impair neutrophil function when copper is low, because zinc induces metallothionein which sequesters copper. The result is a net immune-suppressing effect from zinc supplementation in copper-deficient individuals — which is precisely the opposite of what someone taking zinc to support immune function is trying to achieve. This is one of the most underappreciated examples of how supplementing one mineral without understanding the full mineral interactome can backfire.

What You Can Do Today

  • If you supplement zinc regularly — whether through a dedicated supplement or a multivitamin — add copper at the 15:1 ratio (e.g., 15mg zinc + 1mg copper daily)
  • Do not take zinc and copper at the same meal — separate them by several hours to avoid the absorption competition that occurs when both are present in the gut simultaneously
  • Food sources of zinc and copper together are generally balanced enough that supplementing is unnecessary for people eating a varied diet that includes shellfish, nuts, seeds, and dark chocolate
  • If you are experiencing unexplained neurological symptoms — numbness, tingling, coordination problems — and take zinc supplements, ask your doctor to check copper and ceruloplasmin levels before pursuing more invasive neurological investigations
  • Pay attention to the zinc dose in cold and flu supplements — these often contain 15-25mg per dose and are intended for short-term use only, not daily chronic use
  • Athletes and people with high sweat volumes lose zinc through sweat and may need higher zinc intake, but should still balance with copper to avoid the absorption competition problem

Zinc is not harmful in isolation — and copper is not harmful in isolation. The balance between them is what matters. Understanding this simple interaction can prevent complications that would otherwise take months of misdiagnosis to identify.
